The danger of the World War III?
(Sep. 4, 2007)

Many learned individuals are apprehensive about the danger of the World War III. The cause of their concern is the countries at the Middle East. Some of Arab countries show overt hostility to the current hegemon, the U.S. The incumbent president, George W. Bush still keeps up a brave front, behind which there are mammoth capitalists of arms and oil industries. The circumstances surrounding this area doesn't allow premature conclusions.

If we faced the worst-case scenario, what should Japan do? What would North Korea, China, and the former Soviet-bloc states do? It is a far cry from the prediction. In any event, Japan would be affected by her security treaty to the U.S. However, she would also be affected by her constitution, which forbids participation in combat.

Since the recorded history, Japan has seldom fought battles against foreign countries. Rather, Japan has a long-time relationship with the southern regions including Okinawa islands, Korea, China, Karafuto (aka Sakhalinskaya), Chishima (aka Kurile islands), etc. Japan has almost never been involved with the serious war such as the Pacific War.

The Pacific War caused the biggest number of deaths in Japanese history. Among the battles during the war, that in Philippine was the disastrous; in the battle line of Philippine, 460 thousand Japanese died. Wear-out rate in Philippine was 78%. However, particularly in the battle of Leyte of Philippine, the wear-out rate was 97%, which means that only 3 out of 100 Japanese soldiers went home. As for the dead of civilians, one of the worst bloodshed occurred when they tried to evacuate from Manchuria after the war; the Soviet military killed more than 240 thousand Japanese civilians and 60 thousand military men.

Furthermore, atomic bomb to Hiroshima and Nagasaki carried off many civilians. Also in Okinawa, many islanders were involved with the deadly combats and killed. Air raid on Tokyo, Osaka, and many other cities killed so many people and the carpet-bombing burnt out these cities.

I think that Japan is almost one and only country qualified to stress the importance of peace because she has never engaged with any war for more than 60 years after the WWII. Japan has to advance the principles of peace. If Japanese people are so negligent of them, it would be no wonder that the WW III breaks out. Let's raise your voice to retrieve Earth from egoism of a small number of power-wielders.
